9 Square in the Air Instructions
Nine Square in the Air is a fast-moving group game played beneath a nine-square overhead grid. The goal is simple: keep the ball out of your square while sending it into another player's square.
Up to nine players can participate at one time, while additional players rotate into the game as others are eliminated. The continuous rotation makes Nine Square especially fun for church youth groups, schools, camps, corporate events, field days and other large-group activities.
How to Play Nine Square in the Air
- One player stands beneath each of the nine squares.
- The player in the center square begins the round by serving the ball upward and into another player's square.
- When the ball enters your square, hit it up and out of your square and into another player's square.
- Each player gets one hit to keep the ball moving.
- Play continues until one player is eliminated.
- After an elimination, players rotate positions and the next waiting player enters the game.
When Is a Player Out?
A player is eliminated when:
- The ball falls into their square.
- They hit the ball outside the entire Nine Square structure.
- They hit the ball more than once before sending it into another square.
- They hit the game structure during play.
How Player Rotation Works
When a player is eliminated, they leave their square and move to the back of the waiting line. The remaining players rotate forward to fill the open position, and the next person in line enters the game.
This keeps the game moving continuously and allows larger groups to participate without having to stop and restart after every round.
Quick Tips for Better Games
- Hit the ball upward enough to clear the overhead grid.
- Keep the ball moving — each player gets only one hit.
- Try to place the ball rather than simply hitting it as hard as possible.
- Stay aware of the other players and the structure around you.
- For larger groups, keep an organized waiting line so new players can rotate into the game quickly.
